Make fabric acorns with Pluimstaart and Stekeltje

This blog post shows you how to make soft fabric acorns for beginners!

It is autumn, and in the forest of Pluimstaart (Bushy-tail) and Stekeltje (Little Spike), everyone is already busy gathering supplies. Hidden among the moss, under the leaves, and along gnarled tree roots lie the most beautiful treasures: acorns in warm shades of brown, green, and purple.
On a quiet afternoon, Pluimstaart and Stekeltje set out together with their baskets. Not to look for real acorns, but to choose fabrics for their winter stores. Because some treasures are simply too beautiful to leave outside.
These soft fabric acorns are small, easy to make, and lovely to place anywhere. Put them in a basket, use them as decoration in an autumn scene, or give them to your favorite forest animal.
In this tutorial, I will show you step by step how to sew your own collection of fabric acorns. Choose one fabric or create a colorful mix of different colors and prints. No acorn has to be the same — just like in the forest.

To make the fabric acorns, you will need:
✼ acorn pattern (free PDF)
✼ fabrics in various colors and/or patterns (or whatever you like)
✼ acorn caps
✼ fabric glue
✼ stuffing material
✼ sewing thread
✼ needle
✼ scissors and, optionally, pinking shears

Cutting the pattern: Cut out the pattern piece for the acorn along the line.

Fold the fabric you are using in half with the right sides together.

Pin the pattern to the fabric and trace around it. Leave enough room to cut out all the pieces.

Sew the pieces with a small straight stitch (0.5 cm seam allowance on the sewing machine) and leave the turning openings open. Make sure to backstitch firmly at both ends of the opening so they stay secure when turning. Cut out using pinking shears.

Turn the acorn right side out and stuff it firmly.

Make small running stitches around the top edge. Gently pull the thread to gather and secure with a few stitches.

Apply glue inside the acorn cap. Press the cap onto the acorn and glue it in place.

And your acorn is ready! It's fun to make several; the pattern sheet also includes a pattern for a smaller acorn. Place your acorn in your autumn scene or on the seasonal table.
